Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon announced plans to introduce the “Car-Free Morning” policy, currently implemented in Kuala Lumpur, to the city of Seoul. During a press conference held at a Korean restaurant in Kuala Lumpur, Mayor Oh mentioned that he witnessed the policy on a Sunday morning and was impressed by how the citizens utilized the car-free space for running. He suggested that this could encourage more people in Seoul to engage in running activities when implemented.
The “Car-Free Morning” event in Seoul is expected to take place from 7 AM to 9 AM on Sundays. Mayor Oh plans to launch a pilot program in the coming spring, which will allow citizens to respond to the initiative. By allocating half of the road for this purpose and ending the event before 9 AM, the impact on public transport will be minimized.
Furthermore, Mayor Oh discussed urban redevelopment and housing supply with the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Ministry. He emphasized the importance of identifying sufficient land for housing without drastically altering existing social infrastructure. Additionally, the mayor expressed interest in lowering the barriers for redevelopment and reconstruction to facilitate urban residential improvements, noting that the central government is positively considering such proposals.
