Minister of Health and Welfare: “The public medical school may have a separate quota rather than an adjustment within the existing quota.”

The government has expressed the need to increase medical school admissions to promote the establishment of public medical schools as a solution to address the shortage of regional doctors.

During a press conference held yesterday (1st), Minister of Health and Welfare Jung Eun-kyeong stated that for public medical schools, setting up a separate quota might be more feasible than adjusting the current quota of existing medical schools.

She explained that if the Estimation Committee provides scientifically based results, the government will make a policy decision on whether to address the issue within the current quota or to increase admissions.

However, she noted that not only the scale of public medical schools but also placement and support policies need to accompany these efforts. The government plans to announce their stance after reviewing supply and demand projections through democratic procedures and social consensus.
