Kumho Tire Gwangju Plaza Fire Nearing Conclusion… Investigation of Resident Damage Underway

Gwangsan District Office to Start Joint Reception Desk at Songjeong Health Center
Compensation Procedures Initiated to Minimize “Secondary Damage”

Gwangju Gwangsan District Office announced on the 19th that it will investigate the resident damage status related to the fire at the Kumho Tire Gwangju Plant. A joint reception desk will be set up and operated on the first floor of the Songjeong Health Center in Gwangsan District from that day.

The operation period of the reception desk will be for a total of 10 days, including weekends, and will run daily from 9 AM to 6 PM. This joint damage status survey with Kumho Tire is a preliminary step to calculate the extent of the damage, with the company planning to conduct separate compensation procedures afterward.

Currently, on the third day since the fire broke out at the Kumho Tire Gwangju Plant, firefighting authorities have entered the final stages of their containment efforts.

The firefighting authorities resumed operations using heavy equipment and manpower early in the morning around 7 AM when daylight broke. It is reported that the containment rate is currently between 90% and 95%.

With heavy equipment such as excavators being used to remove debris that poses a collapse risk and to completely extinguish any remaining embers, full containment is expected to be possible by the end of the day.

The fire at the Kumho Tire Gwangju Plant was reported to the firefighting authorities at 7:11 AM on the 17th. It is tentatively determined that approximately 50-60% of the western plant (Plant 2) of two units in the Kumho Tire Gwangju Plant has been lost due to this fire.

Gwangsan District, which has activated the Disaster Safety Measures Headquarters and put all employees on emergency duty to ensure resident safety by providing over 33,000 dust masks in the nearby area and setting up and operating temporary shelter facilities at Gwangju Women’s University, plans to continue efforts such as operating medical consultation windows and deploying water trucks to minimize secondary damage from smoke and dust even after the fire suppression.
