In July, former national baseball player Oh Jae-won was sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in prison for drug use. Recently, he received an additional suspended sentence for receiving methamphetamine from an acquaintance. On the 24th, the Seoul Central District Court sentenced Oh to 4 months in prison, with a 2-year suspension, for violating the Narcotics Control Act. The court emphasized the significant harm drug-related crimes cause to society but considered his cooperation with the investigation, his admission of guilt, and the small amount of methamphetamine involved as factors in determining the sentence.
Last November, Oh was charged with receiving 0.2 grams of methamphetamine from an acquaintance. He admitted to all charges during the trial. In a separate case in July, Oh was sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in prison for multiple instances of methamphetamine use from November 2022 to November 2023, and for storing 0.4 grams of methamphetamine in a friend’s apartment corridor. He also faced charges for receiving Stilnox tablets 2,242 times from acquaintances from January to March 2023. Oh is currently appealing this case.
Additionally, on the 15th, the prosecution charged Oh again for receiving 2,365 sleeping pills, a form of medical narcotics, from younger baseball players on 86 separate occasions.
