“I will see snow in the middle of May”… Seoraksan ‘Heavy Snow’ that made people doubt snow.

On the 15th of May, amid an unusual heavy snowfall warning issued in the northern mountainous regions of Gangwon Province, snow has piled up near the Sorak Mountain emergency shelter. According to the Sorak Mountain National Park Office, heavy snow started falling the previous day at 5:30 p.m. and by the next morning at 6 a.m., 40cm of snow had accumulated at the Sorak Mountain emergency shelter and 20cm at the Jungcheong emergency shelter. The Gangwon Regional Meteorological Administration reported that from 7 p.m. the previous day to 8 a.m. the next day, 14.9cm of snow covered the Hyeongro Peak, with over 10cm of snow accumulating on high-altitude areas above 1000 meters. Even on the day following the heavy snowfall warning in Gangwon’s mountainous regions, places received 1-5cm of snow, and in other high-altitude areas, less than 0.1cm of snow may fall or accumulate by morning.

The Meteorological Administration cautioned, “Areas where snow is falling may have icy roads and black ice, so be cautious of safety accidents.”
