Hong Nam-pyo, the mayor of Changwon, has been given a suspended sentence that could lead to his removal from office. On the 3rd, the Supreme Court’s 3rd division, led by Justice Lee Sook-yeon, confirmed the lower court’s ruling, which sentenced Mayor Hong to six months in prison with a one-year probation for violating election laws.
Mayor Hong was indicted in November 2022 on charges of attempting to offer a government position in exchange for a local politician’s agreement not to run in the June 1, 2022 local elections.
The first trial acquitted Mayor Hong due to insufficient evidence, but the second trial handed him a sentence of six months in prison with a one-year probation, which could invalidate his election win.
