“Hong Jun-pyo, the mayor of Daegu, argued for a reorganization of the administrative system, saying that if Daegu City and North Gyeongsang Province were unified, it would become the second largest city in the Korean Peninsula.
Mayor Hong stated that by eliminating the province and establishing a two-tier administrative system connecting metropolitan cities directly to the central government, redundant functions of agencies would be streamlined, leading to a simplified administrative system and maximized administrative efficiency.
Governor Lee Cheol-woo of Gyeongsangbuk-do also echoed the need for restructuring the administration into a multi-pole system through the integration of cities and provinces with over 5 million people in order to address national issues such as low birth rates and regional depopulation.
He further added that Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do had sufficient research results from discussions on administrative integration in 2019, making it possible to elect a unified leader for Daegu-Gyeongsangbuk in the local elections in 2026.
