Gyeongnam, which has the largest island population, begins the ‘Comprehensive Island Development Plan for 2026-2030’.

“Changwon, Yonhap News, Reporter Lee Jeong-hoon: On the 19th, Gyeongnam Province held a report meeting on the commencement of ‘Establishing a Comprehensive Island Development Plan’ at the Gyeongnam Social Economy Innovation Town, which will be pursued between 2026 and 2030.

A professional consulting company will establish an integrated island development plan by the end of February next year, including improvements in the living conditions of island residents, expansion of transportation and welfare, and revitalization of the regional economy.

Along with the province, seven cities and counties in the southern coastal region, including Changwon City, Tongyeong City, Sacheon City, Geoje City, Goseong County, Namhae County, and Hadong County, will participate in the project.

Based on the ‘Island Development Support Ordinance’ enacted in 2019, the province will establish a five-year comprehensive plan for island development.

The Gyeongnam region has a total of 554 islands, both inhabited and uninhabited, making it the second-highest among metropolitan cities and provinces in South Korea after Jeonnam, with an island population exceeding 300,000, the highest in the nation.”
