Gyeonggi Province is set to invest 100 billion KRW this year to implement 52 projects aimed at enhancing competitiveness in future industries and improving residents’ quality of life through the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
Firstly, Gyeonggi Province will embark on the creation of an ‘AI Techno Valley.’ The initiative will involve introducing tailored technologies across various districts through the ‘AI Challenge’ call for proposals and identifying tasks related to solving social issues. The province seeks to attract AI cooperation centers domestically and internationally in partnership with big tech companies like NVIDIA, Cisco, and Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Gyeonggi Province plans to conduct joint research with leading AI cities and research institutions overseas, while also developing the AI ecosystem within the province through technology and personnel exchanges. Additionally, collaborations will be strengthened between local AI companies and global universities and research institutes. High-performance computing resources such as GPUs will be provided to AI companies, along with limited support for development servers based on domestic AI semiconductors to nurture local AI semiconductor companies.
Through private investment linkage and large-scale infrastructure development, Gyeonggi Province will also promote the establishment of industrial and research complexes. AI innovation clusters will be established in four places including Pangyo and Seongnam, and two AI hub clusters will be set up in the north and south. Furthermore, the operation of the ‘AI+X Academy’ will support education on AI adoption and application for companies and startups.
The province will introduce personalized AI services in caregiving projects, deliver AI and IoT-based elder care services, health management, leisure features, as well as AI video analysis and consulting services for individuals with developmental disabilities. It will also strengthen its system to prevent and respond to solitary deaths by utilizing data-driven crisis prediction and monitoring.
To build trust in AI, a committee of about 25 experts will be formed to manage AI safety and ethics guidelines. An ‘AI registration system’ will be introduced to register and publicly disclose AI service information utilized in Gyeonggi Province.
Additionally, efforts will be made to expand generative AI-based content production and daily life AI services, incorporate renewable energy at AI computing centers, and implement high-efficiency cooling systems. Training will be provided for key Ph.D. and master’s degree researchers with research capabilities and practical AI skills. Public administration will see increased use of AI, with the development of a Gyeonggi-type generative AI model (LLM).
Gyeonggi Province is investing 100 billion KRW this year in these initiatives, particularly designing the Gyeonggi Generative AI Platform to be utilized in a plug-in format by linking it with various leading external AI models, based on data owned by the province.
Kim Ki-byung, head of Gyeonggi’s AI Bureau, stated, “These nine strategies and 52 key projects will serve as a stepping stone for Gyeonggi Province to emerge as a leader in the global AI innovation ecosystem,” adding that efforts will be made to strengthen the AI ecosystem in the capital region to make Gyeonggi Province a global AI hub.
