Gwangju City announced today (the 15th) that it will invest 12.2 billion won by 2027 to convert and establish the urban railway Line 1 into a system based on the LTE-R, the next-generation railway communication network.
Once this system is established, a 4G wireless communication network will be operational even in areas prone to communication disruptions, such as tunnels, allowing for response to emergencies.
The current voice-centered wireless communication system (VHF, TRS) used by urban railway Line 1 will be completely replaced with a 4G network capable of high-speed and large-capacity data transmission.
In particular, the ability to control CCTV video and share videos from accident sites will allow for real-time sharing of voice and video information with the fire department, police, and others in emergencies such as fires, terrorism, and medical emergencies. This is expected to significantly reduce response and rescue times.
Gwangju Transportation Corporation plans to begin construction throughout Line 1, including control systems, main lines, stations, depots, and trains, starting next year.
Kim Jong-ho, head of the Metropolitan Transportation Division, said, “We expect that the establishment of the railway integrated wireless network will enhance the communication and control systems of urban railway Line 1 to meet national standards.”
