On the 12th, the city of Busan announced the launch of the “Marine Think Tank Policy Cooperation Network” for the continuous development of new marine industries.
The network is established to strengthen the cohesion and execution capability of the institutions participating in the “Marine Think Tank Task Force (TF)” that the city formed in August. It aims to broaden discussions on the development of the marine and fisheries sector in Korea.
Participating in the network are the Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology, the Korea Maritime Institute, the Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering, the Korea Marine Equipment Research Institute, the Small & Medium Shipbuilding Research Institute, the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology, the Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials, the Korea Food Research Institute, the Korea Ocean Business Corporation, the Busan Institute of Science and Technology Promotion, and Busan Techno Park.
At the inauguration ceremony held at City Hall that afternoon, participating institutions are expected to sign a “Business Agreement for the Discovery and Fostering of Leading Areas in New Marine Industries” along with a policy exchange meeting.
With the launch of the network, the city plans to actively support building a research ecosystem centered around government-funded research institutes specializing in maritime affairs within the region through bold investments in “Marine and Future Technology Convergence” research.
Mayor Park Heong-joon stated, “Busan will leap forward as the axis of economic development in the southern region centered on the marine industry, contributing to realizing the vision of a global hub city. We will create a new job sector that young people prefer, establishing a virtuous cycle system where companies and talent grow together.”
