In an evaluation conducted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety for disaster management in 2025, Gangwon Province has been selected as an excellent institution. This evaluation assesses the comprehensive capabilities of 335 disaster management responsibility institutions nationwide in the phases of prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery.
Gangwon Province received high marks for the governor’s familiarity with disaster management tasks, proactive preparedness and response systems, and swift judgment and action during actual disasters. The province achieved perfect scores in 16 out of 30 quantitative indicators, recognizing its disaster safety capabilities.
Notably, during the heavy snowfall exceeding 40 cm during the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympics, the province successfully completed recovery through collaborative efforts with relevant organizations, earning praise domestically and internationally. Additionally, by opening a wildfire prevention center and establishing early monitoring and response systems, Gangwon Province recorded the smallest wildfire damage area (8.39 cm²) in 22 years, marking the year as a milestone with no large wildfires.
Moving forward, the province plans to immediately improve any deficiencies highlighted by this evaluation, establish integrated safety management systems between the province and local municipalities, and strengthen disaster management capabilities through civilian, public, and military cooperative training and enhanced response manuals.
Governor Kim Jin-tae stated, “As a result of prioritizing the safety of residents and continuous efforts, we have received a good report in the disaster management field. We will continue to strengthen the disaster response system together with local municipalities and the private sector to create a safer Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province.”
