Daejeon City and ETRI to Launch Autonomous Driving Cooperative Communication Technology Demonstration… Secured 4.5 Billion Won in National Funding

Daejeon City and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) announced on the 14th that they will promote the demonstration of autonomous driving technology.

The core of the project is to dramatically enhance the safety and efficiency of autonomous driving by implementing seamless V2X communication in heterogeneous environments such as vehicles, road infrastructure, and communication networks. To this end, ETRI will focus on developing key services, including collaborative driving, collaborative perception, and remote control.

The city plans to conduct technology demonstration in connection with the autonomous driving pilot zone it is establishing in collaboration with ETRI. Currently, groundwork is underway with the goal of launching passenger transport services using two autonomous buses, including vehicle modifications, building high-precision road maps, and installing communication infrastructure. The demonstration is scheduled for completion in December.

In particular, the Seamless V2X communication technology under development is expected to be a key component that enables real-time collaborative driving between autonomous buses, integrated control, and remote control of multiple vehicles, significantly enhancing the completion of the pilot zone. It is anticipated to have a direct impact on maintaining safe distances between autonomous vehicles, sharing unexpected situations, and selecting efficient routes.

A total of 4.5 billion won in national funding is expected to be invested in this project.

A city official emphasized, “Through cooperation with ETRI, we will actively support Daejeon in establishing itself as a core hub for autonomous driving technology demonstration” and added, “This demonstration will provide practical opportunities for improving traffic safety, as well as for the growth of the autonomous driving industry ecosystem and local businesses.”
