‘258 times the national standard for hazardous substances has been found in children’s bicycles sold on the Chinese online platform AliExpress.’
Seoul City announced that out of 16 products including children’s inline skates, kick scooters, bicycles, glasses, and sunglasses being sold on AliExpress were tested, revealing that 8 products exceeded the national standard for harmful substances or had inadequate durability.
In two types of children’s bicycles, phthalate plasticizers were detected at levels 258 times and 240 times higher than the national standard, respectively. Phthalate plasticizers are endocrine disruptors that can affect reproductive functions and cause irritation to eyes or skin upon contact.
Moreover, phthalate plasticizers exceeding the standard were also found in two types of children’s inline skates, which showed cracks and breakage during tests on appearance, structure, performance, driving, and shoe attachment strength.
Two types of children’s kick scooters were also deemed inadequate in terms of impact resistance and device safety during tests.
