Ministry of Foreign Affairs: “Korean in his 50s Dies Locally”
49 out of 64 Repatriated Suspects Arrested so far**

In the aftermath of a 20-year-old Korean university student, identified as Mr. Park, being kidnapped, detained by a criminal organization, tortured, and killed in Cambodia, his remains were repatriated to Korea on the morning of October 21st. The remains, which had been cremated following an autopsy abroad, arrived at Incheon International Airport around 8 a.m. on Korean Air Flight KE690, marking 74 days since Mr. Park was found deceased on August 8th.

A joint autopsy was conducted on October 20th at a temple in Phnom Penh involving six officials each from Korea and Cambodia, lasting approximately three hours. After concluding the autopsy, cremation took place, and the decision was made to repatriate the remains immediately. Mr. Park’s body had been kept in the temple’s mortuary since August.

Mr. Park had told his family he was going to a trade fair on July 17th, after which he traveled to Cambodia. He was subsequently kidnapped by a local crime group in an area known as ‘Wenchi,’ and after enduring severe torture, was found dead in a car on August 8th in the vicinity of Bokor Mountain in Kampot Province.

The investigation into Mr. Park’s death is continuing with planned domestic examinations, such as toxicology tests, alongside ongoing investigations in both countries to determine the exact cause of death.

Separately, a Korean man in his late 50s was found dead on October 20th (local time) in a hotel room in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that local police informed the embassy via a Korean community leader, who confirmed the death with the victim’s passport, a note presumed to be a will, and a mobile phone at the scene. The authorities have initially assessed little connection to the crime compound.

In relation to the ongoing crackdown on crimes such as voice phishing in Cambodia, 49 out of 64 suspects repatriated to Korea on October 18th have been arrested so far.
