‘Additional medical school admission’ to be confirmed this week…Attention focused on ‘proportion of regional talent admissions’

On the 17th, a fire broke out in a lecture hall at a medical school in Gyeonggi Province, as shown in the image. The plan for the university entrance examination for the 2025 academic year, including the additional recruitment for medical schools, is expected to be finalized this week. Once the plan is confirmed, details such as the ratio of local talent recruitment and the ratio of regular and rolling admissions will be announced, attracting attention from test-takers and parents.

According to the education industry on the 19th, the Korean Council for University Education (KCUE) is scheduled to convene the University Admissions Committee this week to review and approve the changes in the “2025 University Entrance Examination Plan” submitted by universities nationwide.

Upon receiving the confirmation from KCUE, universities must finalize and announce the recruitment guidelines for new students on their school websites by the 31st. The website will include information such as recruitment units, majors, recruitment quotas by admission method, and how academic records or the university entrance exam results will be taken into account.

Each university has already submitted a draft of the “2025 Entrance Examination Plan” containing the details of the rolling admissions guidelines. This draft is expected to be practically confirmed through the approval of the University Admissions Committee meeting this week.

Out of the 32 medical schools that have received new admissions quotas this year, except for Chae Medical School, the recruitment quotas for the other 31 universities have increased by 1,469 from the previous year. Chae Medical School’s admissions quota has increased from 40 to 80 as part of the expansion this year. If next year’s additional quotas are set at 50% (20 students), the total admissions quota for medical schools next year will be 1,489. If all additional quotas are to be filled, the total admissions quota will be 1,509.

Including the Seoul metropolitan area universities that maintained the existing quotas, the total recruitment quota for domestic medical schools this year ranges from a minimum of 4,547 to a maximum of 4,567. Most universities are expected to finalize the process of amending their regulations to reflect the increased quotas this week. As universities that have suspended regulation amendments resume related procedures following the rejection of their applications for suspending the implementation of additional medical school quotas, attention is now focused on details such as the size of regional talent recruitment and the ratio of regular and rolling admissions, as these may affect candidates’ application strategies as well as the number of spots available.
