A large-scale recreational forest called ‘Pureunae Natural Recreation Forest’ is being developed around Bomunsan, a representative urban relaxation area in Daejeon. The city of Daejeon announced on the 18th that it has started landscaping and civil engineering work for the creation of the ‘Pureunae Natural Recreation Forest’ on Bomunsan.
This development is aimed at providing forest leisure services to citizens by utilizing the green resources of the Bomunsan area located in the heart of Daejeon. Daejeon City established the development plan in 2022, conducted preliminary site investigations, and completed basic and detailed design; the Korea Forest Service approved the designation of the area as a natural recreation forest, along with granting permission to use national forest lands in January.
The Pureunae Natural Recreation Forest will be established in the Mokdal-dong and Guwan-dong areas of Jung-gu, Daejeon, covering an area of 2.96 million square meters (approximately 900,000 pyeong). The Phase 1 Mokdal District development is set to be completed by September of next year, while the Phase 2 Guwan District project will continue until 2028.
The recreation forest will feature various forest experiences tailored to different life stages, including a prenatal forest, birth forest, infant forest, forest experience center, forest bathing area, pet-friendly forests, and a forest management area. Accommodation facilities with 50 rooms, such as vacation houses and forest cabins, along with 20 camping sites, will also be constructed. The project will require an investment of about 79.7 billion won.
Daejeon City plans to transform the Bomunsan area into a forest tourism attraction that combines nature, relaxation, and experiences through the development of the natural recreation forest. This is anticipated to enhance the forest welfare service foundation for residents, aid in the advancement of the tourism industry, and stimulate the local economy.
Lee Jang-woo, the Mayor of Daejeon, stated, “The Pureunae Natural Recreation Forest will add value to the Bomunsan area, which is a precious asset of Daejeon. We plan to establish a world-class forest welfare and leisure complex to ensure that the Bomunsan area becomes a new landmark in Daejeon and a representative forest tourism destination of South Korea.”
