On the 12th, demands were made at the National Human Rights Commission of Korea’s plenary meeting for an independent investigation into the death of Acting Chief A and concerns were raised that there should be serious contemplation at the commission level to prevent a recurrence of a tragedy like the one involving A. The meeting was held for the first time since the discovery of Chief A’s body in an apartment in Sejong City on the 8th. Some members at the meeting demanded that an internal investigation to clarify whether there was any impropriety in the decision-making process related to Chief Kim’s duties be conducted and requested a plan for an independent investigation by the commission. There were also voices calling for the development of measures to ensure the independence of the commission’s staff and urging Chairman Yoo Cheol-hwan and Vice Chairman Jeong Seung-yoon to take responsible actions. It was recognized that Chief A had expressed discomfort to acquaintances and others about the investigation of a luxury bag incident and going against his conscience, suggesting that the Chairman and Vice Chairman had not adhered to the Conflict of Interest Prevention Act.
