The hottest night in the history of Gangneung… Rain showers amidst daytime heat wave [Weather]

Last night, Gangneung experienced its warmest night in history with the lowest temperature reaching 31 degrees. The relentless heat continues to build up across the country. Seoul, which has been recording tropical nights for the 12th consecutive day, is expected to reach a high of 32 degrees today. Due to high humidity, the heat index is forecasted to soar up to 35 degrees. It seems that the heatwave and tropical nights will persist for a long time, so it is important to take extra precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.

Today, scattered showers are expected in the central region, while brief showers will pass through the southern region. Rain will start in northern Gyeonggi and Yeongseo, gradually expanding to other parts of the central region. The expected rainfall by this afternoon ranges from 5 to 40mm, with northern Gyeonggi seeing over 60mm. Moreover, from the afternoon to the evening, loud showers of 5-40mm are anticipated in the southern inland regions. While it would be nice if the rain could cool down the heat, it is likely to raise humidity even more.

Amidst the nationwide heatwave warnings, the daytime temperatures for today are expected to peak at 32 degrees in Seoul, 35 degrees in Gwangju, and 37 degrees in Daegu. The heatwave is expected to continue through the weekend and holidays, with possible showers due to atmospheric instability in the southern part of Chungcheong tomorrow and in Gangwon and southern Gyeongsang the day after. As the scorching heat persists, the highest level of heatwave alert, “serious,” is currently in effect nationwide. It is advisable to avoid excessive outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day to prevent health issues.
