[Report]
This is the Jeonbuk University Integrated Information System where academic information including majors and grades can be viewed.
This system was hacked, leaking personal information of over 320,000 current students, graduates, and lifelong education center members.
Names, resident registration numbers, addresses, and up to 70 other items were exposed.
Victims are concerned about secondary damages such as phone financial fraud.
[Hoo Hanne/Jeonbuk University Student: “I’m very worried because the information could be sold to strange places. Still, what should we do?”]
[Lee Min-hyung/Jeonbuk University Student: “Naturally, everyone is surprised and worried.”]
Security vulnerabilities were also exposed.
The hacker attempted the first attack in the early morning of the 28th of last month and took personal information from that night to the next. However, the university only discovered the hacking incident 13 hours after the damage occurred.
[Kim Soon-tae/Jeonbuk University Director of Information Innovation: “We have a system in place that can automatically detect when usage reaches a certain level, but this hacker intelligently hacked in small amounts less than the usage.”]
Despite receiving a ‘good’ grade in last month’s Ministry of Education’s information protection level diagnosis, controversy arises over whether the diagnosis was appropriate given this incident.
The university blocked hacker IPs that passed through Japan and Hong Kong after the hacking and enhanced security. They also stated that they are collaborating with national intelligence agencies, police, etc., for investigation.
To minimize damages, the university explained that users can check if their information was leaked on the internet and that a reception desk for damages is operational.
