‘Retired Marine Corps Division 1 Chief Lim Sung-geun applied for an honorary retirement last week.’

According to the Navy and Marine Corps on the 30th, former division chief Lim submitted an honorary retirement application to the Marine Corps headquarters on the 23rd. Marine Corps Commander Kim Kye-hwan approved it on the 26th, and it was reported to the Navy headquarters on the same day.

According to the provisions of the Military Service Act regarding honorary retirement, a soldier who has served for more than 20 years can receive an honorary retirement allowance if they voluntarily retire honorably before the mandatory retirement age. In the case of former division chief Lim, who has less than 5 years until mandatory retirement, if he passes the review for honorary retirement, he will receive an amount calculated by multiplying half of the monthly salary at the time of retirement by the number of months left until mandatory retirement.

The Navy headquarters plans to convene a review committee as early as next week to examine whether former division chief Lim’s honorary retirement is appropriate. However, it is unlikely that he will be able to retire honorably as individuals under investigation or subject to investigations by the defense personnel management regulations are excluded from being selected for the honorary retirement allowance.

Currently, the High-Ranking Officials’ Crime Investigation Office is conducting an investigation into external pressure suspicions related to the death of Corporal Yoon, involving former division chief Lim and former Defense Minister Lee Jong-seop.

In a case where former division chief Lim was reported to the Gyeongbuk Provincial Police Agency for involuntary manslaughter and abuse of authority, he was not indicted for charges. However, the Yoon family submitted an objection claiming “no charges.” If an objection is raised in a case where no indictment was made, the case will be transferred to the prosecution. The prosecution may directly conduct further investigations into the suspicion of former division chief Lim or request supplementary investigations from the police in the future.
