According to recent reports by SBS, a woman in her 30s, referred to as A, died on May 27 at a mental hospital in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, just 17 days after being admitted.

The cause of death is suspected to be ‘acute gastrointestinal obstruction.’ According to CCTV footage, A complained of sudden abdominal pain while admitted in a single room, but nurses and caregivers restrained her to the bed after administering medication to her.

A started gasping for breath, and even after being released from the restraints, the hospital’s response was reportedly inadequate. Eventually, A lost consciousness, received emergency treatment such as CPR, but succumbed to death.

The family of the deceased claim that the hospital did not take appropriate measures for A and have filed a criminal complaint against the medical staff for negligent homicide, submitting a petition to the National Human Rights Commission.

The police have initiated investigations against hospital staff, including Yang Jae-woong, on charges of violating medical laws. Yang Jae-woong expressed deep remorse regarding the incident during the admission process, stating, “I cannot conceal my sad feelings about the incident that occurred” and sincerely apologizing to the bereaved family.
