“The power of the world’s first AI phone”… Galaxy S24 narrows satisfaction gap with iPhone 15

The first AI phone from Samsung Electronics, the ‘Galaxy S24’ series, was unveiled on the 18th in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, at ‘Samsung Gangnam’. The Galaxy S24 is on display. The Galaxy S24 series consists of three models: ‘Galaxy S24 Ultra’, ‘Galaxy S24+’, and ‘Galaxy S24′. Pre-sales will take place from the 19th to the 25th, and the official release in Korea is scheduled for January 31st, 2024.

Released in January, Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy S24 series, the world’s first on-device AI smartphone, has significantly closed the satisfaction gap compared to the Apple iPhone 15 series. The satisfaction gap between the flagship smartphone series of the two companies used to be close to 100 points in a 1000-point evaluation, but now it has narrowed down to just 1 point, approximately 0.1%.

According to the result of the ‘2024 First Half Mobile Communication Planning Survey’ conducted by the mobile communication specialist research organization Consumer Insight on the 25th, the overall satisfaction score for the Galaxy S series was 705 points, just 1 point behind the Apple iPhone (706 points). Consumer Insight has been conducting this survey once per half since the first half of 2005. The survey was conducted from April 11 to May 3. It compared satisfaction with mobile phones, focusing on the latest smartphones from Samsung Electronics and Apple after the respondents who had purchased a mobile phone in the last 6 months.

The score gap between the Galaxy S series and the iPhone series was 4 points in the first half of 2020 (iPhone 718 points, Galaxy S 714 points), but it widened through the first half of 2021 (gap 56 points) and the first half of 2022 (gap 95 points). In the survey last year, the Galaxy S23 narrowed the score difference with the iPhone 14 to 33 points. The Galaxy S23 Ultra received praise for its performance and speed, including the ability to take long-distance shots at concerts with a 200-megapixel camera with 100x zoom.

In this survey, the Galaxy S24 once again significantly narrowed the score gap with the iPhone 15 to 1 point. However, there are some regrets. Both the Galaxy S24 (716 points → 705 points) and the iPhone 15 (749 points → 706 points) saw a decrease in satisfaction compared to their predecessors. The Galaxy S24 received the same score as the S23 in the latest technology, performance, durability, size, weight, and grip comfort, but it lost 1-2 points in the other 7 categories. The iPhone 15’s score reflected dissatisfaction with the latest technology and performance (-8 points), design (-5 points), relative weakness in camera functions, battery consumption issues, and complaints about the same design for 5 consecutive years.

Among the new AI features applied to the Galaxy S24, the feature consumers most wanted to try was ‘real-time call translation’ (74%), followed by ‘enhanced photo editing’ (37%), ‘recording assist’ (34%), ‘circle-to-search’ (32%), and ‘chat assist’ (32%). Consumer Insight commented on these features, stating that while they are all innovative features with AI, their practical utility in real life remains uncertain and it is necessary to confirm if they directly contribute to increasing user satisfaction.
