In India, the general election spanning 6 weeks has come to an end.

Exit polls released after the voting ended predict that the political coalition led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling party is expected to secure a sweeping victory.

On the final day of voting in India’s general election, despite the scorching weather, voters lined up at polling stations to cast their valuable votes with various expectations.

[Shaheen Paveen / Voter, 28 years old: It doesn’t matter who comes to power for me. But I want a peaceful life in India.]

[Shahnawaz Alam / Voter, 47 years old: Our country, India, needs to progress. We need to move forward. Now is the time.]

After the general election voting, which lasted from April 19 to six weeks, local media outlets announced the results of the exit polls.

It is predicted that the ruling party led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ‘National Democratic Alliance’, will secure a majority of seats out of the 543 seats in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament.

On the other hand, the main opposition party-led coalition is expected to secure around 120 seats.

As a result, Prime Minister Modi’s chances of winning a third term, following in the footsteps of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru after independence, have increased.

Modi confidently stated on social media, “I can say with confidence that the people voted overwhelmingly for the re-election of the current government.”

On the other hand, the opposition dismissed the exit poll results.

[Malikarjun Kharge / Leader of the Indian National Congress: We expect the opposition alliance to have at least 295 seats in the Lok Sabha, could be more, but it is not certain.]

While the exit poll results in Indian general elections have broadly aligned in 2014 and 2019, there was a significant deviation in 2004 and 2009. It is necessary to wait for the official results to be announced after the vote counting takes place on the 4th.

Once the official results are announced, the party or coalition that secures a clear majority or the highest number of seats will nominate a presidential candidate to form the next government.
