The amended Comfort Women Victims Act takes effect tomorrow… Up to 5 years in prison for spreading false information.

▲ On May 6, participants are performing a reenactment of the “Statue of Peace” at the regular Wednesday rally for the resolution of the Japanese military sexual slavery issue, held near the former site of the Japanese Embassy in Jongno-gu, Seoul.

From now on, anyone who disseminates false information and defames the victims of the Japanese military ‘comfort women’ will be subject to criminal punishment.

The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family announced that the amendment to the Victims of Sexual Slavery Act, which includes these punishment provisions, will be implemented starting tomorrow.

As a result, anyone who distorts victimization or spreads false information with the intent to disparage victims of the Japanese military ‘comfort women’ could face up to five years in prison or fines of up to 50 million won.

This fine is five times higher than the maximum under the general criminal code for defamation by falsehood.

The mediums and actions subject to punishment include publications like newspapers, magazines, broadcasts, the internet, exhibitions, performances, screenings, and activities with wide dissemination, such as gatherings or lectures.

However, activities for public interest or scholarly purposes, such as art, science, research, or reporting, are exempt from punishment.

The Ministry of Gender Equality also plans to conduct a comprehensive survey of the status and condition of memorials and symbolic structures for victims of the Japanese military ‘comfort women’ installed nationwide, including the “Statue of Peace.”
