Jeong Jeom-sik, a three-term lawmaker from Tongyeong-Goseong in Gyeongsangnam-do, has been elected as the new floor leader of the People Power Party. He secured his victory in a runoff election held during the party’s general assembly on the 10th, defeating Kim Doh-eup, who received 48 votes out of a total of 103. Seong Il-jong finished third and did not advance to the runoff.
Before the voting, Jeong pledged to pursue change and innovation that aligns with the public’s expectations, emphasizing the need for more aggressive reforms due to delays in unification and renewal. He expressed his intention to expand the party into a metropolitan and centrist party, with Yeongnam serving as its foundation.
Jeong, originally a prosecutor, first entered the National Assembly through a by-election for Tongyeong-Goseong in Gyeongsangnam-do in 2019, and has since been elected three times consecutively. He served as the policy committee chairman under Jang Dong-hyuk’s leadership and is considered part of the pro-party power faction. His longtime association with former President Yoon Seok-yeol from his prosecutorial days marks him as a prominent original pro-Yoon figure.
