NH Nonghyup Bank released a report on the 14th titled “How Much Should You Give for Wedding Gifts?” which analyzed data from 5.33 million transactions made by 1.15 million customers transferring wedding gift money between January 2023 and December 2025.
According to the report, the average wedding gift per year increased steadily: 110,000 KRW in 2023, 114,000 KRW in 2024, and 117,000 KRW last year.
The proportion of gift money by amount showed that 50,000 KRW was the most common at 42.3%, followed by 100,000 KRW at 39.7%, and 200,000 KRW at 7.5%.
However, recently, the proportion of 50,000 KRW gifts decreased, while those of 100,000 KRW or more increased. The proportion of 50,000 KRW remittances decreased from 46.5% in 2023 to 42.3% last year, while the proportion of 100,000 KRW remittances increased from 36.1% to 39.7%, and 200,000 KRW remittances rose from 6.1% to 7.5% during the same period.
High-value wedding gifts also increased. The proportion of gifts worth 1 million KRW or more grew from 2.95% in 2023 to 3.17% last year, and gifts worth 10 million KRW or more increased from 0.22% to 0.36%.
Notably, the number of transactions involving 100 million KRW or more for wedding-related purposes increased 14 times in 2024 compared to the previous year and 1.6 times last year compared to the previous year.
Nonghyup Bank analyzed that the increase in high-value wedding gifts was influenced by the marriage and childbirth gift tax exemption implemented in 2024, which allows a deduction of up to 100 million KRW when gifting to direct descendants for marriage or childbirth.
The average wedding gift by age group was the highest at 138,000 KRW among those in their 20s and 30s, followed by 118,000 KRW for those aged 60 and above, and 107,000 KRW for those in their 40s and 50s.
By region, the average wedding gift was highest in Seoul at 134,000 KRW, followed by Busan at 128,000 KRW, Gwangju at 124,000 KRW, and Incheon at 119,000 KRW.
