The ‘Bongseonsa Temple Bell in Namyangju’, regarded as the masterpiece of early Joseon bronze bells, has been designated as a national treasure.
The Cultural Heritage Administration announced today (23rd) that the Bongseonsa Temple Bell in Namyangju, which was previously designated as a treasure in 1963, has been recognized as a National Cultural Heritage Treasure.
The Bongseonsa Temple Bell was created by King Yejong, the 8th king of the Joseon Dynasty, with the intent of memorializing his father, King Sejo. It combines certain stylistic elements of Chinese bronze bells with Korean decorative features.
The Cultural Heritage Administration explained the designation was based on several factors: it is the only large royal-commissioned bell from early Joseon that remains in its original location—the bong of Bongseonsa Temple; it is in excellent condition with minimal structural issues; and it represents the completed form of Joseon-era bronze bells, making its protection as a national treasure necessary.
Additionally, other items were designated as cultural heritage treasures. These include the Goryeo-period celadon ‘Celadon Inlaid Twin Dragons Chrysanthemum Vase’, and the Joseon-period portrait ‘Portrait of Yu Hyo-geol and Related Items’. Moreover, one portrait and a record describing its creation were added to the collection of ‘Portrait of Yun Jeung’ that had already been designated as a treasure.
