The National Heritage Administration and Godeokwon Establish a Fund for Korea-Japan Cultural Heritage Academic Exchange

Received 100 million yen donation from Godokwon
Support for Emerging Researchers and Symposiums

On June 24 last year, at the National Palace Museum in Jongno-gu, Seoul, attendees watched a video of the dismantling of the Gwanwoldang shrine, which returned from Japan after 100 years, at a media presentation. Korean Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA) announced on the 20th that on the 18th, it signed a donation agreement with Godokwon in Japan, the Korean National University of Cultural Heritage, and the Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation to promote a Korea-Japan cultural heritage academic exchange project. A “Godokwon Fund for Korea-Japan Cultural Heritage Academic Exchange” was established with the 100 million yen (approximately 900 million KRW) donated by Godokwon.

The four organizations will use this fund to support research expenses for emerging researchers in Korea-Japan cultural heritage, support related publications and translations, and organize symposiums. An official from CHA stated, “A long-term academic exchange foundation has been established by maintaining the principal of the fund and operating it with interest income.”

This collaboration was made possible by the return of the cultural heritage “Gwanwoldang” from Japan last year, thanks to the donation by Sato Takao, the chief priest of Godokwon. The CHA recognized this contribution by awarding President’s Citation to Chief Priest Sato.
