Phishing Group Arrested for Scamming 24.5 Billion KRW Using ‘Fake Arrest Warrants’

“A group of 23 individuals involved in voice phishing scams, which netted over 20 billion won by establishing bases in China and Southeast Asia, has been arrested.

The Gyeonggi Uijeongbu Police arrested 35 members of the voice phishing criminal organization on charges of criminal organization and fraud, with 23 of them detained.

From June 2023 to the previous month, this group is accused of conducting voice phishing scams based in countries such as China, Thailand, and Laos, swindling 24.5 billion won from 224 victims in South Korea.

The group impersonated prosecutors to deceive victims by claiming they were implicated in financial crimes and could be arrested, presenting false arrest warrants to extort cash, gift certificates, and gold.

Investigation revealed that they also installed malicious apps and remote control apps on victims’ phones under the pretext of conducting remote investigations to verify their bank balances.

The police, who launched the investigation in November 2024, announced that through Interpol’s red notice, they apprehended 21 members in China and, in October last year, carried out a raid on a call center in Laos, capturing an additional 14 members.”
