The sentencing hearing of Kim Geon-hee, the former First Lady and wife of former President Yoon Seok-yeol, will be broadcast live on the 28th. The Seoul Central District Court’s 27th Criminal Division (presiding judge Woo In-seong) announced on the 27th that it accepted the request from the special investigation team led by Min Joong-ki and broadcasters for live coverage of the sentencing hearing scheduled for 2:10 PM on the 28th. This decision takes into account public interest and societal importance, as it is the first judicial ruling since the special investigation team began its investigation into Kim last July.
Kim has been charged with participating in the manipulation of Deutsch Motors’ stock, resulting in unfair profits of approximately 810 million won, and was indicted in August of the previous year. She also faces charges of receiving the results of opinion polls worth about 274 million won free of charge from Myung Tae-gyun on 58 occasions before and after the 2022 presidential election. Additionally, she is charged with conspiring with Jeon Sung-bae, known as “Geonjin Beopsa,” between April and July 2022, to receive valuables worth 80 million won from former Unification Church world headquarters director Yoon Young-ho under the pretext of soliciting church-related issues.
The special investigation team, during the final hearing on the 3rd of last month, requested an 11-year prison sentence, a 2 billion won fine, and a forfeiture of 811.44 million won for Deutsch Motors’ stock manipulation and receiving goods from the Unification Church. For the charges of receiving free opinion poll results, they requested a 4-year prison sentence and a forfeiture of 137.2 million won.
On the same day, sentencing will also be rendered at 3 PM and 4 PM for Kwon Seong-dong, a People Power Party lawmaker, and former director Yoon, who are involved in allegations of collusion with the Unification Church. However, these rulings will not be broadcast separately.
