Police Impose Travel Ban on Lawmaker Kang Sun-woo Amid ‘100 Million Won Nomination Fund’ Suspicion

The police have imposed a travel ban on independent lawmaker Kang Seon-woo, who is under suspicion of receiving nomination funds for a local election.

At a regular briefing on the 12th, Park Jeong-bo, head of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, announced the travel ban on lawmaker Kang, Kang’s former secretary Nam, and Seoul City Council member Kim Kyung.

Lawmaker Kang is accused of accepting a bribe of 100 million won, money exchanged through Nam as a price for giving a nomination to Kim on the eve of the 2022 local elections.

The police initiated a forced investigation into these individuals the day before. The Public Crime Investigation Division of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency conducted searches and seizures at Kang’s residence and office at the National Assembly, Kim’s two residences and city council office, and Nam’s residence.

Criticism, however, has been raised regarding the effectiveness of the searches, as they were conducted nearly two weeks after a recording containing allegations of the bribery was made public on the 29th of the previous month.
