On the evening of the 30th of last month, Yang Jun-hyuk appeared as a new boss on the KBS 2TV variety show ‘The Donkey Ears.’ Yang, who was known as ‘Yang-god’ with remarkable records during his 18-year baseball career, was now called ‘Bang-god’ for his successful fish farming business.

Running a fish farm in Guryongpo, Pohang, Yang Jun-hyuk operated four businesses, including a fishing spot, a sashimi restaurant, and a cafe, across an area equivalent to about 3,000 pyeong (around 9,917 square meters). His wife, Park Hyun-seon, who is 19 years younger than him, also ran a cafe and lived there with him.

‘The Ears’ MC Jun Hyun-moo has known Yang Jun-hyuk since the KBS 2TV variety show ‘Qualifications of Men.’ He emphasized Yang’s consistency and passion by saying, “He has been running the fish farm since ‘Qualifications of Men’.” Yang Jun-hyuk indeed had been working relentlessly for the past 6 months, sleeping only 2 hours a night, waking up at 2 a.m. to tend to the young fish and their feed.

Perhaps due to his overflowing passion for work, Yang prioritized the fish over his wife. He commented, “These days, our kid and the fish are on the same level. My wife is below the fish,” drawing criticism. His longtime friend, Jun Hyun-moo, was shocked and remarked, “Even this kind of guy got married.”

In addition, Yang Jun-hyuk faced criticism for treating his wife Park Hyun-seon poorly. Even when Park brought him a separate breakfast to the fish farm considering his health, he complained, saying, “It’s bland,” or “You should bring some kimchi too.” He also seemed to prioritize the employees at their shared meal, causing Park to respond, “You should take care of your husband first.”

Panelist Kim Young-hee pointed out, “Why eat breakfast there when there’s a restaurant?” and added humorously, “If it were me, I’d give him fish soup if he says it’s bland.” Even Park Hyun-seon tried to reason, saying, “You always eat salty and spicy, let’s get used to milder flavors together as we age,” showing understanding of Yang.

However, even Park Hyun-seon was frustrated by Yang’s ‘business obsession.’ Before achieving success in farming, Yang had failed in various business ventures, including steak, bean soup, and a screen baseball pub. Even with the fish farm, he faced numerous failures with different fish species before finally succeeding with the current setup. Yang himself remarked, “If I had bought a building in Seoul with the business money, I would have earned as much as Seo Jang-hoon.”

Despite everything, Yang remained ambitious. He invested 40 million won in a truck and 180 million won in a 5-ton water tank for fish farming. Park Hyun-seon, unaware of these expenditures, was shocked upon discovering them after an employee’s revelation. She asked, “Where is all the money coming from? You don’t have any money for me.” In response, Yang replied, “You use what you earn from the cafe,” adding to the shock. Jun Hyun-moo quipped, “Looks like he’s married to fish.” When asked if his wife receives a salary while Yang controls the finances, Yang awkwardly replied, “I give her both living expenses and a paycheck.”

Nonetheless, Yang expressed ambitions like exporting fish overseas, revitalizing Guryongpo into a tourist area, and creating fish steak dishes. Park Hyun-seon asked, half-jokingly, “So I make things better while you cause the commotion?” and Yang coldly retorted, “What have you done?” This left viewers in disbelief.

In an interview with the ‘The Ears’ production crew, Park Hyun-seon lamented, “I’m dressed thinly now. Came here for the cafe opening on April 26 and haven’t returned home since. My winter clothes are at my family home.” Employees added, “You should take care of your wife first,” agreeing with Park’s complaints of Yang starting things and leaving the rest to her.

Finally, Jun Hyun-moo remarked, “Do I need to be like that to get married?” Kim Young-hee added, “Only someone with as much maternal instinct as Park Hyun-seon could put up with that.” Meanwhile, Yang expressed a desire for a second child, saying, “I am considering it.
