[Digital Daily, Reporter Eunbyul Cho] Actor couple Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin’s simultaneous win of the Best Actor and Best Actress awards at the 46th Blue Dragon Film Awards has sparked reactions online, with some saying “it’s hard to understand.”
On the 19th, Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin won the Best Actor and Best Actress trophies at the 46th Blue Dragon Film Awards held at the KBS Hall in Yeouido, Seoul, for their performances in the films ‘Harbin’ and ‘No Choice,’ respectively.
In addition to their lead acting awards, the couple also won the Popular Star Award alongside Jinyoung Park and Yuna Im.
Netizens have raised questions about Hyun Bin’s win over Lee Byung-hun who delivered an outstanding performance in ‘No Choice,’ and Son Ye-jin’s win for a supporting role in the same film was especially questioned.
Nominees for the Best Actor award this year included Hyun Bin, Lee Byung-hun, Jung-min Park from ‘Face,’ Kyung-gu Sol from ‘A Normal Family,’ and Jung-seok Cho from ‘Zombie Daughter.’ Best Actress nominees included Hye-young Lee from ‘Overrun,’ Hye-kyo Song from ‘Black Nuns,’ Jae-in Lee from ‘High Five,’ and Yuna Im from ‘The Devil Came.’
Netizens particularly questioned Son Ye-jin’s award because, unlike top actresses like Hye-young Lee, Hye-kyo Song, and Yuna Im who led their films with prominent performances, Son Ye-jin’s character in ‘No Choice’ was more of a supporting role, leading some to believe she shouldn’t have been nominated in the first place. She portrayed Mi-ri, the wife of the unemployed main character Man-soo.
One netizen commented, “Son Ye-jin’s role did not have much impact, and wasn’t ‘No Choice’ Lee Byung-hun’s show of acting prowess?” Another remarked, “The list of awardees should be convincing for the film festival to maintain credibility.” Generally, the reaction was that the wins were unexpected.
Previously, Director Park Chan-wook mentioned that the role increased in size after Son Ye-jin was cast in ‘No Choice.’
Meanwhile, ‘No Choice’ took home a total of six awards at the Blue Dragon Film Awards, including Best Film and Best Actress.
Director Park, who is currently attending a retrospective at the American Cinematheque in LA with Lee Byung-hun, had his acceptance speech read by Seong-min Lee.
The Best Supporting Actor award went to Seong-min Lee for ‘No Choice,’ and the Best Supporting Actress award to Ji-hyun Park for ‘Hidden Face.’ The Best New Actor award was won by Bo-hyun Ahn for ‘The Devil Came,’ and the Best New Actress award went to Do-yeon Kim for ‘Amoeba Girls and School Ghost Story: Founding Anniversary.’
