Trump indicates willingness to accept a shutdown-ending compromise… “We will open the country soon”

The U.S. Senate has entered final discussions to end the federal government shutdown, and President Donald Trump expressed his willingness to accept a compromise plan. On the 10th (local time), during the swearing-in ceremony for the U.S. Ambassador to India held at the White House, President Trump was asked by reporters if he would accept the Senate’s ongoing shutdown agreement, to which he replied, “Yes,” adding that the country would “open very quickly.”

Earlier, Republicans, along with moderate Democratic Senators, passed the first step of the process vote for the interim budget in the Senate. They agreed on three departmental budgets, including the Department of Agriculture, which had bipartisan consensus within the fiscal year 2026 annual budget, and the federal government interim budget until January 30th of next year.

In exchange for cooperating on the budget, moderate Democratic Senators secured promises for a Senate vote in December on extending health insurance subsidies under ‘Obamacare,’ as well as the reinstatement of federal employees laid off after the shutdown. However, Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer opposed the agreement regarding Obamacare subsidies.

President Trump described the compromise plan as “very good.” He further stated, “We will not hand out $1.5 trillion to people like those being released from prison, gangs, and drug dealers. They want health insurance benefits, but that would harm our healthcare system,” repeatedly criticizing Obamacare.

The compromise plan will officially take effect after passing the final Senate vote and then going through a House vote and President Trump’s signature.
