“Rethinking Capitalism” Theme… Emphasis on AI and Semiconductor Collaboration Expected
(Seoul=Yonhap News) Reporter Han Ji-eun = Chey Tae-won, the chairman of SK Group, will visit Japan next week to address the issues facing global capitalism and propose solutions for a shared future.
According to the business community on the 11th, Chairman Chey will attend the “Tokyo Forum 2025” event, themed “Rethinking Capitalism,” at the Yasuda Auditorium at the University of Tokyo on the 21st.
During his opening speech, Chairman Chey is expected to address issues such as inequality, sustainability, and technological transition faced by capitalism and propose a new economic paradigm centered on “solidarity.”
For years, Chairman Chey has emphasized the importance of economic cooperation between South Korea and Japan, expressing his belief in the need for cooperation similar to the European Union’s economic community model.
With the forum’s sub-theme being “Varieties, Contradictions, and Futures,” it’s anticipated that Chairman Chey will highlight practical solutions to transcend capitalism’s contradictions through technologies like artificial intelligence (AI).
In areas of strong potential for South Korea-Japan economic collaboration, Chairman Chey has previously pointed to AI and semiconductors. SK is currently discussing semiconductor technology development with Japan’s NTT.
On the same day, Chairman Chey will also participate in a business leader session with Teruo Fujii, the President of the University of Tokyo, and Mutsuo Iwai, Senior Vice Chairman of the Japan Business Federation. The session will be moderated by Park Chul-hee, Special Advisor to the Japan Center for International Exchange and former ambassador to Japan.
At last year’s Tokyo Forum, Chairman Chey remarked, “Everyone is now talking about AI,” emphasizing that despite facing challenges in adding and adopting new ventures, SK has managed and created synergies successfully with the help of design thinking.
The Tokyo Forum is an international conference jointly organized by the Chey Institute for Advanced Studies and the University of Tokyo since 2019. This year’s forum, running for two days until the 22nd, will feature dozens of speakers and panels, including business leaders and scholars.
