“Shifting Away from Regulatory Focus to Rapid Renewable Energy Transition”
“Proactively Nurturing the Industrial Ecosystem…Growing into a National Growth Engine”, writes reporter Jung Doo-ri from E-Daily. The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment (MCEE) announced that it will hold its first wind industry meeting presided over by Minister Kim Sung-hwan at the Han River Flood Control Office on the 22nd to gather opinions for accelerating wind energy deployment.
At the meeting, representatives from turbine companies like Doosan and Unison, major equipment companies like Hanwha Ocean, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, and Seongdong Shipbuilding, as well as executives from domestic and international developers such as SK Innovation E&S, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), KREDO, and GS Wind, along with experts and wind association representatives, will be present.
During the meeting, Minister Kim stated, “The establishment of the Climate Ministry aims to lay the groundwork for a swift transition from fossil fuel-based carbon civilization to a renewable energy-based carbon-free green civilization.” He emphasized that the Climate Ministry will move beyond its traditional regulatory role previously handled by the Environment Ministry and focus on promotion, striving to become a leading department in the renewable energy transition.
Minister Kim also mentioned, “We will actively develop the industrial ecosystem along with the expansion of wind energy deployment,” and announced plans to cultivate offshore wind into a national growth engine through the successful launch of new projects. For onshore wind, he plans to quickly establish a government-wide task force (TF) led by the minister to address industry licensing issues with a one-stop approach.
On this day, the industry is expected to deliver practical insights and challenges from wind energy sites. The government plans to actively incorporate industry feedback and quickly initiate actions such as the launch of a government-wide TF for onshore wind, support for new project licensing through an offshore wind TF, and the establishment of subordinate legislation under the Special Act on Offshore Wind.
Additionally, MCEE will continue to communicate with the industry and related experts to explore the optimal strategy for accelerating wind energy deployment in the future.
