CNN selected Korea’s street food, gyeran-ppang (egg bread), as one of the world’s top 50 breads on the 18th (local time). Alongside France’s baguette, Mexico’s tortilla, and America’s biscuit, it was introduced as a bread representing Korea.
CNN spelled it as ‘gyeran-ppang’ and described it as “hidden treasure inside a loaf,” stating that it contains a whole baked egg inside a single serving-sized flour bread.
CNN further noted that “gyeran-ppang is one of the most popular foods on the streets of Seoul” and “can be enjoyed hot at any time throughout the day, including breakfast.”
They also mentioned, “Adding ham, cheese, and chopped parsley turns it into a sweet and savory snack,” and evaluated it as a snack that “warms the belly during Korea’s long winter.”
Besides gyeran-ppang, other breads like China’s shaobing, Japan’s curry bread, France’s baguette, Italy’s ciabatta, Mexico’s tortilla, America’s biscuit, and Russia’s каравай were among the breads representing Asia, Europe, the Americas, Africa, and the Middle East selected for the ‘Top 50 Breads in the World.’
CNN explained that the ‘Top 50 Breads in the World’ list reflects diversity and was chosen based on memorable flavors, unique ingredients, iconic status, and the simple joy they bring on their own.
