K-Design Shines on the World Stage: Asia’s First ‘Design Miami’ in Seoul

When we see the enthusiastic overseas reactions to our content, like K-pop and K-dramas, it really hits home that the most Korean is the most global. Now, this influence is expanding even into artistic fields like design.

Reflecting this trend, a world-renowned design event, famous for its exclusivity, is being held in Seoul for the first time in Asia.

Reporter Kim Hye-joo visited the scene.

Horsehair, used in the past to make scholars’ hats, has been transformed into sophisticated lighting.

Furniture made from stone and wood, the main materials of Korean crafts, also stands out.

These are works by Korean designers selected by major design galleries worldwide.

At this exhibition organized by Design Miami, a global design platform, over 170 pieces have been submitted, ranging from works inspired by traditional crafts to creations utilizing modern materials.

[Jen Roberts/CEO of Design Miami: “Until about 10 years ago, the presence of Korean designers wasn’t very significant. Today, Korean designers are taking on educational roles or becoming major players influencing the field.”]

This Seoul exhibition is particularly meaningful as it is the first Asian event for Design Miami.

It can be seen as an official acknowledgment of the growth potential and international stature of Korean design.

[Cha Kang-hee/Seoul Design Foundation President: “We can confirm that the international stature and potential of Korean design have greatly increased, and this year marks the starting point.”]

The exhibition, which highlights design works that harmoniously integrate tradition and innovation, will continue until the 14th.
