[Financial News] Criticism continues for the second day from first-term lawmakers over the remark by Na Kyung-won, a five-term member of the People Power Party, saying, “First-term, just sit still.”
First-term lawmaker Kim Sang-wook of the Democratic Party commented in an interview on MBC Radio’s ‘Kim Jong-bae’s Focus’ on the 3rd, “Every member of the National Assembly is a constitutional body with the duty to protect the constitution and can act independently and individually.” He added, “It’s not about being first-term, second-term, or having many terms.” Kim questioned, “Did Representative Na really protect the constitution as a multi-term member? Has she set a good example for first-term lawmakers?”
Kim further remarked, “It’s truly embarrassing,” expressing doubt about whether Na possesses even a basic concept of democracy, given her public comments.
Another first-term Democratic Party lawmaker, Noh Jong-myeon, wrote on Facebook, “While the behavior is completely unacceptable, I am even more angered by what she claimed as an explanation afterward.” He criticized Na’s statement, “I mentioned first-term lawmakers because they are not familiar with parliamentary conventions.” He highlighted specific issues, saying, “Even as a first-termer, I resist those so-called conventions like animalistic parliamentary fights, an ineffective ethics committee, defending figures like Lee Jin-sook and Ryu Hee-rim, compromising committee chair roles and stalling reforms, manipulation of broadcasting, passing human rights committee members who are recommended by the opposition, and ignoring first-term lawmakers.”
Progressive Party Spokesperson Jung Hye-kyung questioned Na on the 2nd through a written briefing, asking, “Is it because you’re a five-termer that you are leading the opposition to Yoon Seok-yeol’s impeachment protection?” She criticized her further by saying, “Na’s parliamentary badge is a waste. Those who are co-conspirators of rebellion should not be in the National Assembly but in prison. Na herself should ‘sit still’ there.” First-term lawmaker Yeom Tae-young of the Democratic Party also took to Facebook on the 2nd, questioning if “being multi-term is like a rank badge” and speculating, “Soon you’ll be saying ‘First-term, get down!’ That deeply ingrained sense of authority.”
Previously, Na sparked controversy during the plenary session of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee on the morning of the 2nd by telling first-term lawmaker Park Eun-jung of the National Reform Party, who opposed her nomination as the committee’s secretary, “First-term, just sit still! Sit still when you know nothing!”
