Criticism within the prosecution is growing against Im Eun-jung, head of the Eastern District Prosecutors’ Office, who defended the abolition of the prosecution’s supplementary investigation rights at a National Assembly debate and criticized senior government officials as the “five enemies of the prosecution.”

Even Jin Hye-won, a chief prosecutor with a pro-government stance, criticized those who claim the supplementary investigation rights are unnecessary. Reporter Han Ji-eun has more on this.

Jin Hye-won is known as a pro-government prosecutor and gained attention for posting photos on SNS with the late Park Won-soon, former mayor of Seoul, after his sexual harassment incident.

Even Jin criticized Im Eun-jung, saying, “Those who claim that the prosecution’s supplementary investigation rights are unnecessary are inciting public opinion to undermine the prosecution reform of the Lee Jae-myung government.”

Previously, Im had strongly advocated for the abolition of the prosecution’s supplementary investigation rights at a National Assembly debate.

“If we leave investigative rights under the guise of supplementary investigation, it would mean that, by simply changing the sign, the prosecution’s office can in effect retain investigative powers…”

On the prosecution’s internal network, there were continued posts criticizing the ruling party’s proposals for restructuring the prosecution.

Jung Yu-mi, a research fellow at the Legal Research and Training Institute, described Im’s argument as “abstract and agitational” and “unfounded and false.”

Kang Su-sanna, a chief prosecutor at the Western District Prosecutors’ Office, said, “A person full of hostility against the prosecution is holding the microphone as if they represent it with full authority.”

Kim Sung-hoon, a chief prosecutor at the Cheongju District Prosecutors’ Office, criticized the separation of investigation and indictment, saying, “It’s called the Middle Investigation Department but reads as Outlaw Court.”
