Donald Trump, the President of the United States, who had previously sought to cancel visas for Chinese students in the U.S., announced a change in stance, stating that the U.S. would accept 600,000 Chinese students. This decision has sparked backlash among his core supporters, according to The Hill, a political news outlet.
According to the report, Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene posted on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “We should not allow 600,000 Chinese students, who may be loyal to the Chinese Communist Party, to attend American universities.”
She further added, “Why should we accept 600,000 Chinese students to replace American students? We must not allow this.”
Far-right YouTuber Laura Loomer also wrote on X, “Nobody wants 600,000 ‘students’ who might also act as spies for the Communist Party to enter the U.S.”
Previously, on the 25th, during a U.S.-South Korea summit with President Jae-myung Lee at the White House, President Trump stated, “We will get along well with China,” and clarified, “There was a lot of talk about not accepting those students (Chinese students). We will accept them.”
President Trump emphasized the significance of “600,000 students,” catching attention.
This marks a 180-degree turn from the aggressive visa cancellation policy for Chinese students announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio in late May. The “600,000 Chinese students” mentioned by Trump is estimated to be more than double the current number of Chinese students studying in American universities.
