Jeon Han-gil: “I was subjected to a search and seizure during the party convention, so why should I be disciplined? I don’t understand.”

Jeon Han-gil, a former Korean history lecturer (real name Jeon Yu-gwan), attended the People Power Party’s Ethics Committee meeting, expressing confusion over why he is being disciplined during the party’s convention period. He stated that the commotion at the Daegu convention joint speech event was not initiated by him but was due to a candidate for the supreme council targeting him first. Jeon intended to clarify the misunderstanding that portrayed him as the aggressor.

Jeon criticized the timing, arguing that it is inappropriate for the party to take swift disciplinary action against him amid ongoing party convention and recent searches of the party headquarters by authorities. He expressed a desire not to see the People Power Party become divided, despite feeling wronged by being barred from attending the convention speech events, and stated that he would comply with the disciplinary decision but believes it should not occur during the convention.

On August 8th, Jeon attended the Daegu-Gyeongbuk joint speech event as a reporter and caused a disturbance by clapping and shouting “Good job” at candidates opposing the impeachment of former President Yoon Seok-yeol. Conversely, he led chants of “traitor” against candidates supporting the impeachment. As a result, People Power Party Emergency Response Committee Chairman Song Eon-seok promptly referred Jeon to the Ethics Committee and banned him from all future party convention events, urging for swift disciplinary action, with the committee planning to decide on Jeon’s disciplinary measures.
