An operative of an Islamic extremist terrorist organization was arrested by the police after illegally entering South Korea and engaging in activities in the country.
The Security Investigation Division of the Gyeonggi Southern Police Agency announced today (8th) that they have arrested and handed over a 40-year-old Pakistani national to the Suwon District Prosecutor’s Office for violating the Anti-Terrorism Act and the Immigration Control Act.
The man is suspected of joining and engaging with the Islamic extremist terrorist organization “Lashkar-e-Taiba” in his hometown in Pakistan in 2020.
In addition, he allegedly submitted a fake “visa issuance application” to the Korean Consulate in Pakistan, pretending to visit South Korea for business in September 2023, obtained a visa, and entered the country in December of the same year to carry out activities.
The police received intelligence from the National Intelligence Service recently, launched an investigation, arrested the man in Itaewon, Seoul late last month, and detained him on the 2nd.
Lashkar-e-Taiba is one of the terrorist organizations designated by the United Nations (UN) and is known for being behind the November 2008 Mumbai attacks in India.
This is the first case where domestic police have arrested and detained a member of a UN-designated terrorist organization.
The police plan to continue their investigation to determine if there are accomplices within the country, if there were any funds raised for terrorism, and if such funds were transferred to the organization.
