President Lee Jae-myung, who departed for Canada to attend the G7 Summit, held an impromptu press briefing on the private jet. He expressed his intention to strengthen international cooperation, including summit diplomacy, to a higher level starting with the G7 Summit.

[President Lee Jae-myung: “As a trading nation, South Korea needs to develop its international relations well so that our businesses can expand abroad more smoothly.”]

A question arose about whether there are any specific points he wishes to advocate for in tariff negotiations should a Korea-U.S. meeting occur during the G7 Summit. President Lee emphasized that while negotiations have many variables, it is crucial not to end up in a more disadvantageous position compared to other countries.

[President Lee Jae-myung: “Diplomacy should not benefit one side while harming the other. We must strive to achieve mutually beneficial results that help everyone.”]

Despite criticisms that attending international meetings so soon after his inauguration might be too ambitious, there was a strong opinion that it was necessary to demonstrate the normalization of Korea’s leadership, which explained the decision to attend the G7.

Domestic issues were also discussed. President Lee expressed confidence that the suspicions surrounding Kim Min-seok as the Prime Minister nominee and Lee Han-ju as the head of the National Planning Committee could be adequately explained.

Regarding the supplementary budget, he suggested that both income support and consumption support should be considered, proposing that a mixed approach might be more effective. He added that a review of the fiscal authorities’ proposal followed by party-government consultations would be needed.
