Ahn Cheol-soo, a member of the People Power Party, stated that Kim Yong-tae, the interim leader of the party, needs to clarify his position as his term is set to end at the end of June, before planning for the party’s convention in September. On the 9th, Ahn posted on social media that the first step the party should take is to apologize to its members and the public, and begin a cold and objective reflection.
The previous day, Kim held a press conference at the National Assembly, announcing that he would proceed with the procedures to hold a party convention by early September to elect new leadership. In response to a question about whether the party would operate under an acting floor leader system until the September convention, he implied that he might extend his term, originally ending in June, until the convention.
Ahn criticized the party’s current state, commenting on internal conflicts regarding party leadership challenges and timing for the convention, as well as the responsibility for their recent election defeat. He stressed the need for Kim to clarify his resignation timeline to avoid unnecessary confusion and allow for systematic planning of the convention.
Furthermore, Ahn emphasized the urgency of a thorough analysis of the election loss, focusing on areas where the party fell short across different demographics. He argued for a sincere reflection, strategic analysis, and specific renewal plans, stating that only through real innovation will the public regain trust in the party.
