Mark Carney, the Prime Minister of Canada, and J.D. Vance, the Vice President of the United States, who visited Italy to attend the inauguration mass of Pope Leo XIV, met in Rome on the 18th (local time) to discuss trade policies between the two countries, according to a statement by the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office.
In the statement, the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office mentioned, “Building on the summit held earlier this month at the White House, Prime Minister Carney emphasized to Vice President Vance that Canada and the United States are stronger when they work together.”
It continued, “To this end, they discussed enhancing border security, cracking down on fentanyl (synthetic drugs), increasing defense and security investments, and exploring areas for mutual cooperation. Additionally, the two leaders talked about the pressing trade pressures and the need to establish new economic and security relationships.”
Prime Minister Carney visited the United States on April 6th and held his first summit with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House.
Previously, Prime Minister Carney was elected as the leader of the Liberal Party in March and successfully extended his administration with the victory of the Liberal Party in the general election held on April 28th.
It is evaluated that President Trump’s imposition of high tariffs on Canada and pressure to incorporate Canada as the 51st state of the United States aroused anti-American sentiment within Canada, leading to a dramatic rise in the Liberal Party’s approval ratings.
