On the 30th (local time), in a phone interview with NBC News, Trump was asked if he wants a third term. He responded, “I enjoy working,” adding, “It’s not a joke,” but he thinks “it’s too early” to talk about it.
The 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution limits a president to two terms. Asked if he has a plan to make a third term possible, Trump affirmed, “There is a way to do it.”
When asked about the scenario of Vice President JD Vance running and then handing over the position to him, Trump said, “That’s one way,” and added, “But there are other ways too.” However, when asked what those other ways might be, he simply said, “There aren’t any.”
Trump further mentioned, “A lot of people want me to run for a third term,” but emphasized, “I say that we still have a long way to go. We’re still in the early stages of the administration.”
To abolish term limits through a constitutional amendment, approval from two-thirds of Congress or agreement from two-thirds of the states is needed for a constitutional convention. In either case, ratification by more than 75% of the 50 states is required.
Trump has frequently mentioned running for a third term. Last month, he asked a crowd at the White House, “Should I run again? Tell me.”
On March 12, during a luncheon event at the U.S. Congress for St. Patrick’s Day, he joked, “I hope to attend at least three more times,” adding that when he uses the term ‘at least,’ “they (the reporters) go wild.”
