(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Lee Bong-seok = Chinese media such as China Central Television (CCTV) reported that an earthquake of magnitude 4.5 (according to the U.S. Geological Survey standard, and China’s report is magnitude 4.2) occurred near Beijing, the capital of China, on the early morning of the 26th.
According to reports, the earthquake occurred at 1:21 a.m. local time in Yongqing County, Langfang City, Hebei Province, 55 km south of Beijing (latitude 39.42 degrees North, longitude 116.60 degrees East). The depth of the epicenter is 20 km.
Tremors were detected in parts of Shijiazhuang, Xiong’an New Area, Beijing, and Tianjin in Hebei Province.
Four minutes later, at 1:25 a.m. on the same day, a 2.9-magnitude aftershock also occurred in Yongqing County (latitude 39.42 degrees North, longitude 116.57 degrees East). The depth of the epicenter is 15 km.
The Chinese earthquake warning network issued a warning 7.5 seconds after the first earthquake occurred, and the China Earthquake Administration initiated a level 3 emergency response.
About 250,000 people received earthquake warnings via mobile phones, and some complained that “I didn’t feel the tremor, but I woke up because of the alarm sound.”
No casualties have been reported at present.
