In relation to the wildfire that occurred in the Yeongnam region, the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism issued a statement today (26th), saying, “Protecting cultural heritage is important, but life comes first.”
In a statement from Supreme Patriarch Jinwoo, the Jogye Order mentioned, “The wildfire sweeping through the northern region of Yeongnam has caused significant damage to many temples, including Gounsa Temple, the head temple of our order’s 16th district and a thousand-year-old temple, as well as Unram Temple.”
It continued, “Even at this moment, wildfires in various parts of the country are causing damages to mountain temples and the public,” and added, “We pray for the rebirth in paradise of those who have lost their lives due to the wildfire.”
Furthermore, it emphasized, “While protecting cultural heritage is important, life should be prioritized above all,” urging, “We hope government authorities prioritize the safety of rescue and firefighting personnel, and we ask that temples in disaster areas be particularly cautious to prevent any human casualties.”
Meanwhile, Jinwoo and others visited Gounsa Temple in Uiseong this morning to check the damage situation related to the wildfire.
Due to this wildfire, Gounsa Temple lost Gawunru Pavilion and Yeonsujeon, treasures of national heritage, to the blaze, and all major buildings, including Geungnakjeon, were burned.
The Jogye Order plans to find ways to support the restoration of temples and cultural heritage lost to the wildfire in collaboration with relevant organizations and on a sect-wide level.
